21 Verses to Help You Instead of Yelling at Your Cherubs.

no yellMommas we had such a great response to our Facebook 30 Day No Yelling Challenge that I thought I would consolidate all 21 verses in one place.

The basic idea was to select one of these a day and recite it over and over instead of yelling at your cherubs.

10 Cool Sciency Things that Make Me Sure There is a God

einstienI love science. It was one of my favorite subjects in school.  I love learning how things work. I am always amazed by how intricate and intertwined everything is on this wonderful planet.

The more I discover how things work the more I realize that our God is an awesome God and the Creator of Heaven and Earth.

Just because we have an explanation of how something works doesn’t diminish the why it works.

We were made to have the capacity to first question the how and then the ability to find out why.

Sure a heart surgeon has years of education and  training in order to delicately perform any number of life saving surgeries, cutting into the human body with such precision, inserting man made life sustaining technology into the body to help prolong and save lives. But why do they have that ability?

Below is a list of 10 AWESOME scientifically explained mind blowing things that are perfect examples of our God at work

walking-into-sunshineSunshine – I love the feel of the sun shining on me. The Sun shines with its own energy. The light you see (and feel as heat) is given off by the Sun’s surface, called the photosphere, which is several hundred miles thick and composed of ever-changing gases. Some of the energy the Sun produces must escape, or it would build up and explode. Whenever you see the Sun shining, you’ll know it’s just releasing excess energy and giving us a little light and warmth in the bargain.

conceptionConception – Out of 280 million sperm one makes it through all the obstacles in the vagina to fertilize an egg which creates a human that grows inside another human – here is a great explanation of the science behind conception. It was too long to quote but it is fascinating. see more at http://www.bubhub.com.au/hubbub-blog/so-what-really-happens-during-conception-and-infertility/

breastmilkBreast feeding – our bodies create the perfect formula to feed the above human being –  Human milk is constantly changing in composition from feeding to feeding. As the baby gets older, the composition of human milk changes as well. Human milk contains more than 200 known components, and some that have yet to be discovered! Human milk is a living substance, full of some amazing properties. – See more at: http://primalblissnutrition.com/2013/01/what-are-the-ingredients-in-human-milk/#sthash.85PeAvxU.dpuf

Gravity – On Earth, gravity keeps the air around us (and everything else) from drifting off into space. Gravity also causes things to fall to the ground, and causes the ocean’s tides, and causes hot air to rise while colder air falls (which in turn causes wind).Earth does have more gravity than some other planets. Gravity is a property of matter, which is anything that takes up space and has mass (weight). Simply, all matter attracts other matter, and the more matter an object has, the stronger its gravitational pull. The really big planets, such as Jupiter and Saturn, have much stronger pulls than Earth. But Mercury and Mars have weaker pulls than Earth because they are smaller.

Tflowershose small itty bitty flowers that have so many colors – Color, when you boil it down to the simplest terms, color exists solely to reproduce and procreate – in plants and in humans.

The Color Making Process The color of flowers, such as the red in roses and yellow in marigolds, are found in pigments that are decided upon in the hereditary genome of the plant. Flower colors of red, pink, blue and purple come mainly from the pigments called anthocyanins, which are in the class of chemicals called flavanoids (what gives plants their color). Here is an article on why flowers have colors http://www.proflowers.com/blog/how-flowers-get-their-color

eyeMy optometrist – How amazing is it that we have the ability to dilate an eye and the equipment to look inside. We can see every component in the eye. And we have the ability to figure out how to fix any number of issues.

(You can actually put all doctors and medical discoveries under this category.)

treeThe fact that trees give off oxygen and absorb carbon dioxide – As other green plants, trees have leaves that contain little green chemical factories. These are able to use the energy of sunlight to convert carbon dioxide and water into chemical compounds such as sugars. As a by-product of that chemical reaction oxygen is given off. There is no other chemical reaction in the world that makes so many tons of stuff per minute.

electrictyThe discovery and harnessing of electricity – Electricity is a form of energy and it occurs in nature, so it was not “invented.” How cool is it that people figured out how to harness it to make all of our lives better?

TriumphThose giant passenger ships and airplanes– mind-boggling that they can float and fly. The reason that a ship floats is that it displaces a lot of water. The displaced water wants to return to its original location, where the ship is now, and this pushes the ship upwards. The force which pushes the ship up is called the buoyancy force. Airplanes fly because they are able to generate a force called Lift which normally moves the airplane upward. Lift is generated by the forward motion of the airplane through the air. This motion is produced by the Thrust of the engine(s).

symphonyThe Symphony or any music for that matter – really how do wood and strings and holes make such beautiful sounds??? How is someone so gifted that they can compose something that makes your heart soar? How can hearing “I Can Only Imagine” by Mercy Me bring you to tears and give you goosebumps? Watch it here https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=N_lrrq_opng

These are 10 of my favorite from a list of thousands.

Today as you drive around and see a flock of birds, an icicle, visit your OBGYN or just about anything else stop and take a moment to give credit to our Creator. It can all be explained scientifically but that does not take out the wonder of how it came to be.

Goose Island BOURBON COUNTY STOUT

goose-island-bourbon-county-stoutHoly Cow, Barrel aged beers can be some of my favorites.

This one doesn’t disappoint.

This is a sipping beer.

The longer you let it linger in your mouth the more complex the flavor becomes. It’s rich vanilla, bourbon, and cocoa flavors combine with a mouth feel that creates a rich and creamy beer that looks as great as it tastes.

This beer will also be getting better with age. Cannot wait to try in in

So light a fire in the fire-place, pour this beautiful beer in a snifter and sit back and enjoy. You will thank me (honestly)

The flavor – Vanilla, bourbon and coco, slightly smokey

Style – Imperial Stout aged in Bourbon Barrels

Pour- Black black black with gorgeous lacy legs and  a thick with a creamy caramel colored head

Body – chewy in the best way,

ABV – 14.2 – LOOK OUT PEOPLE

When to cross things off your prayer list

paradeThis weekend I was the driver of the float in our local Christmas Parade.

In my youth I used to be the girl on top of the float but that season has passed. I am now the nondescript driver.

During this season of life I had two darling young things sticking out of the car as we drove down the parade route. They were perfect. They had the parade wave down pat. They smiled and enjoyed being the center of attention

As I crawled down the street at 1 mph I had plenty of time to think of how my life has evolved. As Christmas music was blaring from the speakers I was feeling pretty sorry for myself. Pretty irrelevant and old actually.

It is funny how you become old overnight. I know they say it is a gradual process but I completely disagree. Honestly I woke up one day and there it was…a tired momma looking back at me with sagging jowls and neck wrinkles that would make a turkey jealous. I remember watching my mom pull her face back in the mirror and say, “Look at how much better I look like this.” At the time I thought it was silly, but now I do the same thing. And she was totally right. I do look so much better with all my sagging skin pulled up. I wish I could just pull it up and secure it with a scrunchy.

Last night I was reading in bed and I got a hot flash. That was sucky enough but this hot flash steamed up the reading glasses that I now need to wear.

Are you kidding me?????

If that isn’t old age slapping you across the face I don’t know what is. Three months ago no hot flashes and no need for glasses. Now steamy glasses from the apparently 110 degree body heat I am throwing off.

It is time to come up with a new battle plan prayer. Usually when I pray, one of the things I ask of our Good Lord is to keep me humble. I am now crossing that off the list. If you ask for these things God gives you an opportunity to practice …frequently

I am changing my prayer.

It will look more like this;

“Lord, I know getting older is part of life. I know you created us to walk along the path you created and that path wears our bodies down. Please help me to age gracefully. Help show me the benefits of aging  and help me  appreciate those benefits. Keep me strong and healthy but also aware that you may require different things from me as I age. Help me to be grateful for where I am right now”

“Oh and PS GOD, Please stop giving me opportunities to be humble”  🙂

CHORE CHARTS

WorkforHire1Hey Mommas,
I found this on FB. I know many of you do not have FB so I wanted to share. For older cherubs I think the WORK FOR HIRE section is super cool. The link includes downloads for the charts or you can make your own chores. Love this. Enjoy watching your cherubs work for it!!!

From Homemade by Carmona

Keeping a clean house can be like pulling teeth…a lot of pressure now, and painful later.

Most of us fuss and “remind” until we’re blue in the face. Hi, my name is “most of us”, and I’m a recovering fusser. It has been quite a journey, I have gone through several chart variations, attempted several systems of reward and discipline, and lots and lots of sighing very deeply.

Chore-System-Collage

The “Task” Center
This area consists of three important parts to help us stay on task; Customized Chore Charts, Work for Hire, and Chore of the Week. No worries, it is simpler than it sounds.

Customized Chore Charts
There are plenty of awesome chore charts floating around Pinterest, but as I can never do anything the easy way, I went ahead and customized charts for my girls.
I felt the need to have a Daily Schedule for quick reference, a To-Do list and a Personal Goals list included in the chore chart. The To-Do’s are more like reminders for those daily tasks that I didn’t want my kids to associate as a chore, such as piano practice. I also allowed them to create their own personal goals to work toward, it gives them a sense of ownership.
I will make my customizable chart available to you in a word document for personalization, and one in pdf format for those who like it as is.
I highly recommend you personalize it to your kids and their needs. Let them fill in the bubbles on the computer, type in their own names, and choose the colors and font. Maybe even change it drastically, add clip art, whatever appeals to you. I believe ownership of a project makes a big difference, both on your part as well as your kids! Make it fun, you really want your kids to have as much a positive view as possible when you’re establishing a chore system!

Download the Kids Chore Chart Word doc, customize, and print! Or if you prefer to keep the same layout I have already created, print and fill in with pen the Kids Chore Chart pdf version.

Chore of the Week
Messes don’t follow a schedule, so every chore chart needs a section that can be flexible. One of the weekly chores listed on the girls chore chart is “Chore of the Week”. On that day, they can choose from one of the options I hang under a Chore of the Week label. It lets me get those extra little miscellaneous tasks accomplished that come along every month or so.

WorkforHire1

Work for Hire
The chores you use for Chore of the Week can be the same set used for Work for Hire. It gives you more opportunities to get those numerous tasks accomplished by your kids (sssshhhhh, don’t tell them), and it gives them an opportunity to clean your wallet out. I’d call it a win-win, or at least a draw. Work for Hire is optional, but since my kids don’t receive an allowance and I don’t buy them toys, they are always clamoring to make a little money… tricky right? I’m encouraging work ethic while getting my home clean. That’s right, like a fox baby, sly like a fox. (Wooo, sorry about that moment, I get a little cheesy sometimes.)

Here you can download the Chore of the Week & Work for Hire sheet. Customize, or just print and cut. http://www.homemadebycarmona.com/chore-system-for-kids/

Making it Work
No matter how many charts you employ, it isn’t the chart that is going to make your kids do their work and do it well, it is you and the system you put into place.
Practice Consistency: Help your kids get into the habit of checking their chart. My kids get small breaks in between chores and school, but until all their chores and tasks for the day are completed, no real fun shall commence. In addition, they cannot opt to “Work for Hire” until all chores and tasks are complete.
Motivate: The hubby very wisely plans “play dates” with the kiddos and “dates” with me, this way all his girls aren’t clamoring for his attention at the same time. This and other fun end of day practices motivate the girls to be finished with all tasks and chores by the time dad comes home. They know that if they aren’t done, they can’t join in the fun until all work is completed. Then the poor sad munchkin who dawdled all day has to work whilst her sisters gleefully play.
Reward: It’s the moment when your kid comes running up to you at the end of a work day and yells “mom, I’m done! Can I play Catan with you and dad when he gets home?”. Victory! She was motivated enough to follow her chart and get all her day’s tasks completed all by herself, and you didn’t even notice until it was done. When this happens, every so often I give the girls an extra reward to let them know I appreciate their initiative and determination. Whether it be a sweet treat, a special activity, or a simply a big hug and an “I’m so proud of you”, be sure to let your munchkin know that he or she did good.

How mommas caused the man cold epidimic

cickAs awful as it sounds I kind of like it when my teenagers are sick. Not really sick sick and definitely not stomach flu sick, but sick enough to stay home.

They are so independent these days. I am not complaining. It is nice to have them make their own lunches, drive themselves to school and do homework with no need for me to prompt them.

But as a momma, every once in a while you just miss being needed. We miss being able to nurture.

When they have a cold they end up being your little needy cherub again.

They look younger

They sound pitiful.

They ask you to do stuff to take care of them.

They lay their heads in your lap and you get to stroke their hair again.

They special request my chicken noodle soup and gobble it up

You get to dote on them without any grumbling or ” stopppp mommmmm”

Alas, I have also realized that this is why men are so lame when they are sick. We mommas are so starved to nurture that we set this expectation with our sons.

It is no wonder that as soon as a man gets a cold they wallow and moan. We have set this precedence.

But you know what? I really don’t care. Their wife is going to have to deal with it. She can complain to her  momma friends about what a baby her husband is when he is sick.

This is my moment to momma bear them and I am not about to stop this vicious cycle that we mommas have created. I am just going to make my soup and put cool rags on their heads.

Years from now when their wife is cranky and looks at me with an eye roll because my son is driving her crazy with his man cold I will just look at her innocently and give her that I totally feel ya head nod.
